New Sumba cords

Introducing new hand crafted Sumbanese Cords to the world of jewellery:

During a family trip to Indonesia, we visited The Sumba Foundation, based on the island of Sumba (eastern Indonesia). We were moved and impressed by their work and by how much they have accomplished.  We began wondering how we might contribute to the important work they continue to do there.

We got inspired when we learnt about an ancient Sumbanese tradition: The Sumbanese use local plants and twist them to create very strong and beautiful ropes as a foundation for various constructions (homes and bridges, etc...). By working together, we asked them to create a new type of cord for us, based on this traditional method, which constitutes a perfect alternative to the cords we already have on offer and compliments our line of jewellery (which includes bracelets and necklaces).

We are very grateful to the Nihiwatu team for the help and support they have kindly shown us in putting this project together. I am now very pleased to present the first Sumbanese collection: a collection of 12 twisted and multicoloured cords that will enhance the appearance of your bracelets all
the way through Spring and Summer. The collection comes in a choice of either thin or thick cord, that is guaranteed not to fade over time.

How to help the Foundation:

When you buy a bracelet from our range, £1 goes toward the Sumba Foundation. By doing so, you will also be contributing to the preservation of local traditions and helping to facilitate the continuity of ethical work.

The Sumba Foundation is deeply committed to lessening the consequences of poverty on the island of Sumba.  Our aim is to provide humanitarian aid by fostering village-based projects that impact health (including services and malaria control), education, water and income-generation, while preserving and respecting the fragile culture and traditions of the Sumbanese people.
Since 2001, when The Sumba Foundation was established by Claude Graves and Sean Downs, water, health, education and economic projects now cover a 110 square kilometer area in West Sumba.  Some key highlights of our work to date include:
  • Five health clinics built and staffed by the Foundation
  • Malaria infection rates reduced by 85%
  • More than 40 water wells and 94 water stations developed
  • Eight primary schools supplied with water, toilets, tables, chairs, library books and supplies
  • Nearly 200 patients have received life-changing surgery
There is still much to be done, - but the solutions to the needs of the people of Sumba are elementary. Helping the people help themselves is the cornerstone for the success of our projects.   In so doing, we are confident that we are building the foundation for a better way of life, while carefully preserving the traditions and unspoiled essence that makes Sumba so remarkable.
