All engraving is done by hand in our Sibylle's Jewels London Studio ensuring individuality of your design.
Engraving by hand is an ancient skill and the technique has not changed for hundreds of years. To achieve high quality engraving takes time, patience and years of practice. It differs from machine engraving because every step in the process is done by hand, the cut is brighter and the graver has more control over the tool to vary the line and create a play of light.
How it works
The jewellery is held steady in a specially made clamp. The next step is to transfer the design by delicately tracing or drawing it onto the piece. This drawing is done with a metal scriber which leaves a faint outline of the design on the metal for the engraver to follow. The metal is finally cut away using an engravers scarper. The main outlines are engraved first and fine details added later.
Artwork, layout and design
Our trade mark is the engraving of monograms, initials and names. Though we normally have a preference for cursive handwriting lettering, we can also engrave in any font or alphabet upon request.
It is also possible to engrave a logo or simple design.
Depending on the chosen design and the engraving artwork, we will carefully decide sizing and spacing to create the most beautiful jewel.
